We're closed but not sitting still. Watch our progress. We are taking the kitchen apart and cleaning everything but the kitchen sink, which we leave to last. The lounges, dining rooms & hall will be spring-cleaned and the hotel readied for Christmas with the Read family. January will see marmalade being made, and a rather momentous event in the history of Clare House will occur; the ‘Gold lounge’ will be revamped. The ‘Gold lounge’ acquired its name in the early 70‘s, when the then new gold carpet was laid and the walls papered. Would you believe it’s the same paper and carpet! In mothers eyes it was ‘untouchable’, “I like it” her words. Well after 45yrs its reached the top of the ‘to do’ list! Fear not, we are going to leave the paper where it is, and panel over it! A time capsule for future generations. The tiled 50’s fire surround will come out, to be replaced by something grander as befits the room. New carpet, curtains & furniture should complete the job. I wonder if it will last another 40yrs? The good work started on our small kitchen garden will continue with a little expansion towards the railway line. New loo’s and semi counter top sinks in the new wing bathrooms, a lick of paint where needed.
All in all a busy late winter and early spring, touch wood everything will be ready for late March, it usually is.
New accolade. We are again very proud to have retained our ‘Inspectors’ Choice’ from the AA, along with two Red Stars and a Rosette for our meals, also a Gold Award from Visit England and inclusion in the Good Hotel & Michelin Guides. A new accolade for 2016 is the Rose Award from Visit England for service excellence.
A hotel for all seasons. From the early spring snow drops, daffodils and a gentle warmth in the sun’s rays, through to the riot of summer colour, autumn’s golden tints and finally into cosy logs fires on chilly winter days - we're open through to mid December so you can enjoy a break in all seasons.
We serve food to residents and non-residents throughout the day. We start with breakfast for the early riser beginning at 8:30-10:00am, followed by morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon teas, and finishing with dinner in the evening from 6:30-7:30pm
We also serve 2 and 3 course Sunday lunches and can cater for parties in an idyllic and restful setting in which you can enjoy excellent food and first class service.
